NAP consistency audit: finding and fixing your clinic's contradictions across the web

Business contact information on ChatGPT and Perplexity is only about 68% accurate. Almost all of that gap traces back to contradictions the clinic itself never checked for.

Why NAP consistency is not a nice-to-have

NAP — name, address, phone number — consistency has been a local SEO fundamental for over a decade, but it has become considerably higher stakes with AI search. As covered in the complete guide, an AI model does not resolve a contradiction between your website and a stale directory listing in your favour. It loses confidence and moves to a competitor whose data agrees with itself. NAP consistency is not about looking professional. It is the specific mechanism that decides whether a model trusts you enough to name you at all.

Where contradictions actually hide

The obvious places rarely have the problem — most clinics get their website and their Google Business Profile roughly aligned. The contradictions live in the places nobody checks: a Justdial or Sulekha listing created years ago with an old address, a Facebook Business Page that still shows a previous phone number, a directory aggregator that scraped your details once and never updated them, or a citation created by a marketing vendor who is no longer working with you.

Format inconsistency is a subtler version of the same problem. “Dr. Smile Dental Clinic” and “Smile Dental Clinic” are the same business to a human and a potential source of confusion to a model cross-referencing entities. The same applies to phone number formatting — +91 63017 02474, 063017 02474, and 6301702474 are the same number, but not always treated as an obvious match across every data source.

The audit, step by step

Start with a search for your clinic's exact name plus your city, and work through every result on the first two pages, not just the first three. For each listing that surfaces — Google Business Profile, Justdial, Sulekha, Practo, Facebook, any dental-specific directory, any hospital or clinic aggregator — record the exact name, address and phone number shown, then compare them character by character against your website's contact page.

Pay specific attention to old addresses if the clinic has moved, old phone numbers if the line has changed, and any listing that still shows a previous owner's or practitioner's name. These are the highest-damage contradictions because they are not subtle formatting differences — they are actively wrong facts a model could surface with confidence, which is worse for trust than an obscure listing simply being outdated.

Fixing what you find

Claim and correct every listing you have access to directly. For listings you do not control — old vendor-created citations, outdated aggregator entries — most platforms have a claim or correction request process, even if it takes longer than editing your own profile. Prioritise by visibility: Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Facebook first, since these feed the platforms with the highest AI recommendation rates per SOCi's 2026 research, then work down to smaller directories.

This is a one-time heavy lift followed by light maintenance, not a recurring project — the goal is to close the gap once and then simply update every platform whenever a genuine detail changes, rather than letting a new contradiction accumulate the next time the clinic moves or changes its number.
