How ChatGPT actually picks which dentist to recommend

ChatGPT recommends only 1.2% of local businesses it could recommend. Here is the mechanism behind that number, and what moves a clinic from invisible to named.

The number that explains everything: 1.2%

SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index, built from nearly 350,000 real business locations, found that ChatGPT recommends only 1.2% of the businesses in its dataset — the most selective of any platform measured, including Perplexity at 7.4% and Google's local 3-pack at 35.9%. That number is not a random cutoff. It reflects how conservatively ChatGPT is built to behave when a wrong recommendation costs it more credibility than a missed one.

This matters for a clinic owner because it reframes the problem correctly. You are not competing for a ranking position. You are competing to be one of a very small number of businesses the model trusts enough to name at all.

There is no dental-clinic database ChatGPT looks up

When someone asks ChatGPT to recommend a dentist, the model is not querying a directory the way a search engine queries an index. It synthesises an answer in real time from whatever public information it can find and cross-reference: your website, directory listings, review platforms, and any editorial or third-party mentions of your clinic across the open web.

This is a meaningfully different process from classic SEO, and it changes what actually helps. A page can rank on page one of Google for “dentist in Visakhapatnam” and still never get named by ChatGPT, because ranking is a relevance signal and being named is a confidence signal — the model has to be willing to stake its answer on you being real, current and accurately described.

Why 68% accuracy is the ceiling, not the floor

SOCi's report found that business contact information on ChatGPT is only about 68% accurate, compared to 100% on Gemini, which reads directly from Google Maps. The report is specific about why: the gap is not caused by ChatGPT failing to do its job. It is caused by the underlying data — across directories, niche sites and data aggregators — being inconsistent in the first place.

In practice, this means most of what determines whether ChatGPT names your clinic correctly happened before you ever asked the question. If your clinic's name, address or phone number differs even slightly between your website, your Google Business Profile and a directory nobody at your practice has logged into since 2022, the model inherits that contradiction. It does not resolve it in your favour. It either drops the detail, hedges the answer, or picks a competitor whose data agrees with itself.

What actually moves a clinic from invisible to named

Three things, based on how these systems are documented to evaluate entities: consistent identity data across every platform where your clinic appears, structured content the model can extract cleanly rather than infer from marketing prose, and enough third-party corroboration — reviews, directory listings, a professional profile like LinkedIn — that the model can verify you are a real, current business rather than take your word for it.

None of these are ChatGPT-specific tricks. They are the same fundamentals that also improve Google AI Overviews and Perplexity visibility, which is the more useful way to think about this: fix the facts once, correctly, and every platform that reads them benefits. The complete guide covers the full picture across all four platforms if you have not fixed the foundations yet.

What this looks like when it works

A clinic that has done this correctly does not show up in every ChatGPT answer about dentists in its city — 1.2% selectivity means most clinics, even good ones, will not be named in any single query. What changes is the pattern across many queries: consistent presence when someone asks about your specific treatment strength, your specific area, or your specific price range, because those are the queries where a well-documented, entity-clear clinic has an actual edge over a louder but less verifiable competitor.

If you want to see exactly where your own clinic currently stands, ask ChatGPT directly: “who is the best dentist in [your city] for [your top treatment]?” The answer, or the absence of one, tells you more about your current entity confidence than any ranking report would.
