LocalBusiness schema markup for dental clinics: a field-by-field setup guide

Which schema type to use, which fields Google actually requires, and the one common mistake that can get a clinic's structured data penalised rather than ignored.

Use the most specific type available, not the generic one

Google's own structured data documentation recommends marking up each business location as a LocalBusiness type, using the most specific subtype available rather than the generic parent type. For a dental practice, that means using Dentist — a subtype of MedicalBusiness, itself a subtype of LocalBusiness — rather than the bare LocalBusiness type most website builders default to.

This is not a cosmetic choice. When Google can identify a business as specifically a Dentist rather than a generic local business, it can associate the page with dental-sector queries and apply the more rigorous evaluation criteria Google uses for medical and health content.

The fields that are actually required

Google's guidance is specific: a business needs a name and a full address object to be eligible for structured data display at all. Beyond that floor, a solid working set for a dental clinic covers name, address, telephone, opening hours and price range, with geo coordinates and a detailed opening-hours specification recommended for more robust display. Keeping the schema's name field identical to your Google Business Profile name is explicitly called out as important — a mismatch reads to Google as a conflicting signal about your identity, which is the exact confidence problem that also undermines AI recommendations.

Placement matters less than most guides suggest. Google recommends putting this markup on your homepage or a single dedicated page describing your organisation — you do not need to repeat full business schema on every page of the site.

The mistake that can actually hurt you, not just fail to help

Most schema mistakes are simply ignored by Google — a missing field means a missed opportunity, nothing more. One specific mistake is different. Google's guidelines state clearly that aggregateRating and review markup within LocalBusiness schema are meant for sites that review other businesses, not for a business rating itself. A clinic adding its own star rating directly into its own LocalBusiness schema is exactly the kind of self-marked rating this rule targets, and Google is explicit that doing so can trigger a manual action against the site.

The correct approach is to let a genuine third-party review platform — Google Business Profile itself, or a review aggregator — be the source of any rating schema, and not attempt to embed your own aggregate score directly into your site's organisation markup.

For a multi-provider clinic

If more than one dentist practices at the clinic, the recommended pattern is a single MedicalBusiness or MedicalClinic block covering the practice itself — name, address, phone, hours, geo coordinates — with a nested Physician entry for each individual provider. Physician schema supports a credential field for board certifications, degrees and specialty qualifications, which is a direct, structured way to surface the expertise signals that also matter for classic E-E-A-T evaluation on provider-specific pages.

What this actually buys you

Correct schema does not guarantee a rich result or an AI citation on its own. What it does is remove ambiguity — it is the difference between an AI system having to infer your specialty and location from marketing prose, and being told directly, in a format built for machines to read without interpretation. Combined with the other five factors that determine AI visibility, it is one of the lower-effort, more durable fixes available — set up once, correctly, and it keeps working without ongoing maintenance beyond keeping the underlying facts current.
