Google AI Overviews for dental clinics: when they show up and how to get in them

AI Overviews appear on 7% of “dentist near me” searches and 97% of treatment-cost searches. That gap is the whole strategy.

The trigger rate depends entirely on what's being asked

Search Engine Journal's 2026 analysis of AI Overview behaviour found a wide gap by query type. Direct, high-intent local service searches — “dentist near me,” “emergency dentist open now” — trigger an AI Overview only about 7% to 20% of the time. Google still tends to answer that kind of immediate, transactional intent with the traditional map pack: three business listings, phone numbers, distance, reviews.

Informational and comparison queries behave completely differently. Questions like “how much do dental implants cost” or “is a root canal painful” trigger an AI Overview commonly in the 76% to 97% range. The more specific and comparison-oriented the query, the more likely an AI Overview appears instead of, or above, the traditional results.

Why this gap matters more than the average number

A clinic that only tracks “does my dentist-near-me search show an AI Overview” is measuring the wrong thing. That query type is the one least likely to trigger one in the first place — and it is already served reasonably well by a strong Google Business Profile in the traditional map pack. The bigger opportunity, and the bigger risk if ignored, sits in the informational layer: the cost questions, the comparison questions, the “what happens during” questions patients ask before they have picked a clinic.

This is also where the same entity-and-consistency fundamentals that drive ChatGPT visibility apply, because Google's AI Overview and Gemini draw heavily on Google Business Profile and Maps data — the most controllable, highest-accuracy data source of the four platforms, per SOCi's 2026 research.

What content actually earns the citation

Homepages and service pitch pages rarely get cited in an AI Overview, because they are not built to answer a specific question — they are built to sell. The pages that earn citations are the ones structured around the exact question being asked: a clear heading that mirrors the query, a direct answer in the first sentence or two, then supporting detail and context underneath.

For a dental clinic, this means the highest-leverage content is not another “why choose us” page. It is a page titled something close to what a patient would actually type: cost breakdowns by treatment, what a first visit involves, how long recovery takes, whether a specific procedure hurts. Answer the question plainly in the first two sentences, then go deeper for the reader who wants more.

The Google Business Profile connection

Because AI Overviews and Gemini are grounded in Google Maps data, the single highest-leverage fix for this specific platform is not new content at all — it is a complete, accurate Google Business Profile. We cover this field by field separately, but the short version: primary category precision, a fully filled-out services section, seeded Q&A, and consistent hours all feed directly into what Google's AI surfaces about you.

Get the profile right first. Then build the informational content that answers the questions your Google Business Profile cannot — the ones that require an actual explanation, not a field.
